FORUM: Bug Reports

This topic was started by Foenix on 14/10/2012, 18:52:12

Hi. I just bought silversword and I am having major crashing issues. When I start playing it will crash after a few minutes. I have a 4th gen iPod with ios 6 installed. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it. I love this type of game and silversword looks awesome. Thank you vey much

Hi there,
A quick reply until someone that knows that configuration spots you: if it is a memory issue try turning off other background applications. iPad actions that do that are doubleclicking home (assuming iPod devices themselves have one), then hitting the x on apps at the bottom active area. It is a fun game, well worth the effort.
grack

I've tried this. No luck :(. I restart my iPod and run silversword with nothing else an still the same thing

Hello Foenix,

sorry to hear that. The game consumes quite a lot of memory due to the many graphics. I will try to change the memory management with the next updates.

Kind regards
Mario

I realize I don't know much about programming but I reset my iPod to factory settings and then ran silversword an it still crashes. I have ran 3d apps that didn't even lag on me. I'm not trying to complain, just really wanna play this game

Are the crashes random, or are they reproducible i.e. after a fight?

Regards
Mario

It seems time related. After a set amount of time in the main screen it crashes. My uneducated thought was its the first autosave or when the music tries to loop.

It's in the main screen? You can't even start a new game? Or can you leave the guild with the predefined party?

Regards
Mario

I'm sorry. I meant the main screen you play from. It crashes as I'm walking around. Again, it seems to be a certain amount of time into the game but I could be wrong. It's frustrating because this looks like a beautiful game. I loved the wizardry series as a kid an was looming forward to this.

Sigh. New update didn't help. Anyone have any suggestions? I really wanna play this game. I'm using a 4th gen iPod with ios 6.

How much ram do you have with no open apps? Is your wifi active? How many apps in the notification center? Are your mail settings set to 'push'? There are alot of different factors. Mine would be fine until an app in the notification center would check, or if I received an email. 85mb+ of ram with no open apps and you should be fine. If you don't have that much ram then you should go back through some settings and turn some stuff off. I have an ipod touch 4g on ios5.1.1

How do I check ram?

Unless you have some custom settings, it should be a small bar at the very top of your display where it shows the date and time...

I've never had that on my iPod even after a factory reset

Yeah, ooops. That's because my device is, um, "altered". Try an app like 'Ram Doctor' or 'Memory Doctor'. The apps are like $0.99 and will show how much current ram you have and an optimize button which will increase ram. I have 'Ram Doctor' and it works very nicely when I am off of the wifi grid. The apps are the only way I know of to check ram usage without "altering" your device. Sorry, it's been so long since my device was in warranty condition, that I forgot how they came. ;)

Hi, I just bought the game a few days ago, right before the update. I have the same problem as the topic creator, and I also have an iPod Touch 4g with iOS 6.0.1. Just as the other person said, it seems to crash right around the same time each time, usually around 2-3 minutes after the app starts. I didn't get a chance to really get into the game until after the recent update, so I am going to try deleting the app and then redownloading. Who knows, maybe it will help.

Damn it. After reinstalling and reseting the device, then putting it in airplane mode and closing the settings app, it still crashed on me shortly after talking to the guard just outside the city. Oh well. Hopefully another update will address this.

Hello,

It seems I have to get an iPod first to test this. Very sorry for this, I will try to find the cause as soon as possible.

Mario

I would suggest to others to NOT upgrade your iOS to 6.0.1 or above until the problem is solved. My iOS (5.1.1) is almost a year old now and I have no plans to upgrade. It works just fine and I see no huge improvements to the iOS updates. Newest doesn't always equal best. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I have tested it now and I can confirm that the game will crash on iPod Touch 4th generation.
This seems to be due to the memory size, and the crashes occur after several memory warnings.
The game needs a lot of memory due to the bitmap graphics, and unless I have found a way to make it consume less memory, please refrain from playing the game on such devices.
iPhone 4+, iPod 5+ as well as iPad 2+ should be ok.
I put up a warning in the App description now.

You may want to contact Apple for getting your money back.
I am sorry for this, but this is an issue that can't be fixed in a short amount of time. Nonetheless I will try to work on the code so that it will eventually run stable.

Kind regards
Mario

Any one else running this app on an ipod touch 4gen? Again, I don't think it is the device. I think it is the version of iOS (or at least, this particular version of iOS on this particular device). I have an ipod touch 4gen running iOS 5.1.1 and have NO issues with the game crashing. EXCEPT when I am running a lot of mobile substrate add-ons which gobble up ram, or if I have a lot of apps pushing in the notification center(or other apps with continuous server checks). The timing of the first posts of crashes coincides very nicely with the release of the iOS update to 6.0.1. Just sayin'...

appthief, you may have a good point about the iOS version because not that many people have complained about this problem so far. Another thing to consider, however, is that you may have more control over background data consumption than others because you have a "modified" firmware. The limitations that Apple puts on the user's ability to modify their own device never ceases to annoy me. The only reason I haven't jailbroken my own model is because I like the convenience of the app store.

By the way, how do I get a refund from apple? I honestly didn't think that was even possible.

You can do it.

First google hit:
<LINK_TEXT text="http://www.labnol.org/software/itunes-a ... nds/13838/">http://www.labnol.org/software/itunes-app-store-refunds/13838/</LINK_TEXT>

If they refuse to refund you, please contact me again.

@dpavol1,

You can continue to use iTunes AND the Appstore after modification. I do it everyday. With Mario being a developer, I'm sure he does not cherish such conversations in his forum. Any one can feel free to PM me with any questions about "modifying" your device. If you are on 6.0.1 though, you're stuck for a while. :geek:

Good news from the iPOD dev-center ;-)

I will implement a "low resolution" option with the next update (2.1.8).
This will reduce the memory needed for the graphics. Although the game will look slightly uglier, it will at least run more stable on 128 MB devices.

Kind regards
Mario

Hello everybody,

Update 2.1.8 is now live.
I have implemented a new option "low resolution" which will lower the graphics quality, but also the memory consumption.
It runs quite stable now on my iPod 4th Gen.
You can find this setting in your App Settings application (not in the settings dialog within the game).

Please try it out!

Kind regards
Mario

Works great. Thanks so much. Amazing game. Wow
