I can't seem to acquire new spells when I advance to the next level . Could this be a bug or something I'm doing wrong ?

You can acquire new spells every two levels of experience. Thus, since you start out at level 1 with spell level 1, you can get spell level 2 at experience level 3, and spell level 3 at level 5. Currently, that's as far as things will go, since the Lite version has a level cap at level 6.
