I hate to sound dense, but I'm at a total loss for how to pick a lock. Every time I attempt to pick a lock with my new rogue, the mini-game starts with a single red square and that's it. Doesn't seem like there's anything for me to do. There's also a red on/off switch looking button at the top left. I don't know what that does either. Looked for a guide or tips but didn't find any.
You press the power switch when the square is green. When all the squares are green (1,2,3...) press open.
If you press the button and make the square red, you can try to unjam (button on right) or exit and use a lock pick (press use item instead of pick lock).
That's it!
But the square is never green. And the square is never "made" red. It starts red and stays that way.
Press unjam. If this doesn't work, when approaching the lock, choose "use item" and use a lock pick, which you can get from the special shop (the night shop) just outside the castle.
The fact that the button is red means you must have pressed it (accidentally?) when the square was red. When the lock isn't jammed, the square alternates between red and green.
There are instructions about the lock mini game in the help compendium.
Hmmm. Thanks. Maybe I've got a bug? Every time I press "Pick Lock" the mini-game comes up. And immediately and without me doing anything at all, the square and the power-button are both red and they stay that way.
Does this happen on all locks? Doors and chests?
Hello,
if it all stays red, your selected character does not have a high enough open locks skill.
The skill is shown on the upper right - if you see a 0% or less there... you won't have any luck.
You may try using a lockpick then.

It's been the case on four chests in a row. My new Rogue has a lockpick skill of 4%.
With 4% the red light should at least flash green for a short moment.
Can you tell me on what map did you experience this?
Was it a random combat chest or a chest that is visible in front of you?

Mario
OK I finally got one, but had to use a lockpick first.
I finally found another chest after a fight. And as before, I clicked "Open Lock" with my Rogue, and again the mini-game started with the single square red and the "power-button" red, both staying that way, as if the chest was jammed from the start. But this time I had lockpicks, so I used one.
After I used a lockpick, I was able to select "Open Lock" again, and I finally saw for the first time a working mini-game where the square blinks. I hit the button at the right time and then was able to open it. Is this working as intended? Maybe some chests start out as jammed?
... edit: And now the second chest I've come across is able to run the mini-game from the start without using a lockpick.
