Not sure if I am making a poor assumption or just using it incorrectly, but I have the elemental water, but the lava is still killing my group. I can't equip it or use it in any way that I can see.
Any hints?

There's lots more lava to come, and the way it pours damage on your group is either buggy or sadistic.
If only you could keep the elemental water!! :x
