Is there any method to the 3 wheels mechanism ? Seems to be random to me.

don't let the dwarves hear this. Of course they never would have created a technique that will give them a random result.
The miners carried a paper with them that showed a list of what combination will lead them to what place but unfortunetely these documents are lost by today.

Is this the dwarf mine to find the shard of creation? I can't figure out yet how to get to the dwarven stronghold. My log entry isn't giving any good clue how to get there. I see on map it's northwest of Annsharbor but I can't find a route there!

Different combos take you to different spots (although there is a lot of redundancy).
There aren't that many combos, so a little trial and error should solve it pretty quickly...the mines themselves are easy to find - just go West from Savage Crossing and look out for the new path that appears in the Forest.
