Is there any spell or other possibility to heal level drain except travelling to Annanwhatsit? Very frustrating if not.

Annsharbour is the only place I know of to have levels restored, but there is a place in the Silver Mountains (assuming you have made it that far) where your Paladin can learn the spell Empowerment, which does the trick.
Don't forget the road wardens, who will get you to the thieves guild hideout in Annsharbour quickly and safely from the castle, savage crossing, Watertop, and outside Karilan Andur.
