Dragon tower confusion - ID: 1325

okay, i went through the dragon tower and got the dragon egg.
i finished it but i'm confused.
i don't understand the clues.
i'm not even gonna start on the masters degree level calculus needed to figure out the age of the mountain...
what i'm confused about is the direction clues through the teleporter maze.
there are 3 separate log entries.
we have
WNESSE
so..i guess there is no way to actually deduce which one is the correct one? so even with the clues it still ends up being trial and error?
In the first sections, before the magic mouth...it seems that the
is the correct one. i figured it out through trial and error because there is no other way.
but then it seems like neither of the other 2 are correct for the second part. i guess those are both red herrings and the second part is pure trial and error with saving and reloading?

I found this pretty confusing, too. Not only were the clues in the log out of order, but one of them was missing the E at the beginning. And the damage in the lava here is worse than Inferno, because it gets applied over and over before you can even move. And there's no "Ouch" when you reach the ledge here, unless you count the one at the end after you plunge to your death! :o
I had to save right before entering the lava cave and restore about 15 times before I found the right path through. Sheesh!
