Darkness in lower tunnels - ID: 1211

so, went down the Castle Tunnels and Magic Flame or Torches were fine.
then went down to the lower tunnels and neither Magic Flame nor Minor Revelation nor lamps worked. Darkness remained.
Am I missing something? Should they work? should all party members light a lamp or cast a spell?
or do i need a special item?

There is an area where no light works in the lower tunnels. Look at your log map to figure out where you are. There are other areas of darkness in the game, some only one square big and others larger. Beware of spinners in areas of darkness.
