I read in Wizard's walkthrough something about javelins being useful because they don't have to be reequipped. I thought it was suggesting that they can be used in combination with melee weapons for your front line. Equipping them removes any other equipped weapon though.
Is there any way of your character having a melee weapon and a ranged weapon so your warriors can contribute, along with the archers and casters in the back rank, while the monsters close with you?

the game does not let you equip melee weapons along with ranged weapons.
