Well,
Thanks to everyone who has nudged me along the way - the game is really exciting.
Is there anyway to re charge a light wand or buy / acquire torches for the underground / dungeon / cave?

Solovey, there's a Night Shop just outside your first camp (turn right at the beginning of the Road to Castle Cranbourgh). You can get torches or packs of five lamps there, and more good stuff.
There are more later in the game, look for the shops that are marked with the star rather than with a weapon/armour symbol. As usual, some shops are better stocked than the others :-)

I kept going there during the day - waited until night and now have all the light I need to explore underground and crypts!
