Just realized that I probably should have posted this here in Gossip, not Guides and Spoilers.

Is it possible to play through the game with only one character? If so, which race and class would be best? I realize that the game was designed to be party based, but I thought it might be interesting to try it with only one character, particularly since one character would level up much more quickly. If one character just won't work, due to the need for certain skills and spells at various points in the game, what is the absolute minimum number of characters you need, and which races and classes?


As I said to your other post you'll probably need two: an archmage and a Dragon Caster. I recommend a master thief before making it a DC. You might try one of everything in the Camp, but never putting more than two in your party...


A hunter with perfect crit hit + alchemy at 100% that becomes a DC + 6 Astral Dragons would mess up virtually every part of the real estate. I have a DC who was a warrior and does 28 hits per turn - he’s also an alchemist. I think I’m going to test out how he does by himself for fun.


You absolutely have to have a DC to win the expansion, but I'm not sure there is any such requirement in the original. It would certainly be difficult -- unless you have a bag full of harmonic gems, you really need a bard with Spirit Chant, e.g. -- but you have me wondering. Xylus-sand mentioned the hunter, which is a good thought. (Alchemy would be a must, but you have to kill Maruziel first.) A bard with plenty of horns is a possibility (because of Song of Life) but a rogue who can hide and use rings, wands, potions, and figurines might work, too, especially if you can keep the hiding ability and change to magic user. (I'll have to try this!) If that works, you might start as a high-man or elf warrior to gain HP, then become a rogue to learn stealth, etc., then switch to mage. Combining skills is the only way I can see to do this before the expansion.


Just for fun, I tried this last night with the rogue. Got killed 4 times by the armory rats! Gave up. :lol:


This question still intrigues me. I was going to make another attempt at save-scumming a solo rogue but there is no way I see to get around the infamous lava walk without magic. A paladin wouldn’t have enough SP to cast that many full heals, Bard’s song won’t cut it, item usage is insufficient if lava damages after each action, and so it seems that there does exist an artificial requirement for a dedicated caster to complete the base game.


There would be many other points of the game where, no matter what you pick, it's pretty much impossible.

The Bandit's Cave at Savage Crossing comes into mind first -- at its center, you face a boss which is, AFAIK, guaranteed to perform critical hit (hits a whopping 16 times in a row!). Well a rogue COULD make it, but they MUST have 99% to Hide and Crit, I'm not coasting on any lower % chance to survive every turn when a battle has the potential to drag on.

The HP/SP sinks are one of the most :twisted: feature in dungeons, ESPECIALLY when there are spinners, anti-buff and magic darkness (looking at YOU, Tarasz Passage), but with enough grinding a Healing potion and Harmonic Gem makes this rather harmless.

The lava fields take away 80~100 hp per action, going into any menu counts as an action, but Healing potions exist, just don't send in a Rogue.

Towards Inferno monsters get immunity to crits, would not recommend bringing a rogue/hunter.

Big M is the proverbial elephant in the room -- he has 20 archmages/high priests/whatever that will obliterate you without Hesitation. Spamming said Hesitation does not advance the fight as you are running solo.

Even if you somehow make this possible, it would require a metric ton of grinding, insane luck and patience to pull that off.
