I recently ran into a stalker and 35 prowlers. This made me painfully aware that I needed to update my gear. Off to inferno where I scored a Firey Avenger of Forgus for my paladin. All that’s left is to throw a rune in there and go smash a stalker. Wait… 9.6M gold?

So I guess I have 2 inquiries. First, is it worth the gold? I could throw a rune into a Lance of Forgus (which has a higher base value than the Firey Avenger) for a paltry 1.25M. Second, is it worth the Electrum Rune (which seem pretty rare)? I hear there’s an Axe of Souls floating around somewhere in the universe. Maybe I should just go questing after that guy? Thanks!

You can't put a rune on the Axe of Souls or any other special, named, equipment like the Dragonbone Bow. You need silver (or better) runes to hit the Stalker and prowlers. DO NOT USE THE ELECTRUM RUNE. It is far too valuable. That should be used on an excellent piece of armor (Andursteel or Forgus) for a character with low hit points or low saving throw. On a monk's buckler, for instance.

Those werewolves are one of the toughest encounters in the game. What you want to do is have your thief hidden (preferably with a safety wand and plenty of healing potion) and your three casters (or two plus a weak character) in the back rank. Have anyone with a quality runed weapon (or Silversword, which is already silver) attack and anyone with a poor weapon defend. Unless your bard has a Singing Sword, he or she should defend every round. (The Singing Sword can take a rune. The bard sword isn't with putting one on.)

I would start with everyone defending and a Farther Foe. Then as they advance you can get a free attack. You will be healing and pushing them away A LOT so you can heal the wounded, so make sure your casters each have 2-3 harmonic gems. These guys are 100% Vmagic resistant, so don't waste spell points on anything but healing, reviving, and farther foe.

Even if you do everything right, the encounter will be touch and go for about a day (game time) and will probably take 36+ hours (game time) to complete.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice Visstar. I’ll just put a silver rune into Firey Avenger then… that will save me a few million gold anyway.
