Some like me favor certain features that some others think would make the game too easy (camping for instance). What would be the chances of adding difficulty levels? Those features like camping which are considered too easy could be placed in lower levels of difficulty and the higher levels of difficulty could be the game as it stands. There could even be a hardcore level above that which makes it even harder.
What would the difficulty level control? One thing is features (like camping). Another might be money (what things cost or how much you get from chests or even what items are available in the stores). Another might be a leveling ratio between players and encounters. Another might be annotated maps. Another might be to be able (on easier levels) to select a task and have a star appear on the map to show you where to go. If you want none of those things, you don't have to have them ... just by setting the level to a harder setting. This way a wider variety of players would want to play the game including perhaps more casual gamers.

interesting ideas, really. I agree that this would perhaps make the game more appealing to casual gamers.
I will try to employ such a mechanism in the upcoming extension and see how it feels.
