I have read through the manual and searched the boards. I can’t figure out how to make my party rest to regain bard songs, health, etc. I am currently paying hundreds of gold just to heal at the monestary and that doesn’t seem right.

Also is there fast travel? I can’t believe that I’m expected to manually trek everywhere just to return to the castle to pay for healing and train after leveling.

Can anyone explain what I’m doing wrong?

You don't generally rest as such. Health you recover mostly with magic and with the Song of Life Bard song. MP you recover at the MP emporeums, for a premium in gold which you can usually afford by the time it's an issue, by waiting, or by the MP recovery Bard song whose name eludes me. Bard songs recover by drinking at a tavern or from a wineskin.

Fast travel is in the form of carriages you can use to travel between (some) towns. The first one takes you from Cranborough to Savage Crossing and back. For your expeditions into the wilds and the depths of various dungeons, you're going to be hoofing it.

You also regain hit points and spell points by being in daylight. That's invaluable early in the game, but later on, you will mostly use spells and potions to heal, and magic rings and the Bard Song "Spirit Chant." (You probably don't have that yet, but you'll love it one you get it.) I don't know where you are in the game, but if you have reached Savage Crossing, this may come in handy:

You heal and recharge 3x as fast in Druid's Grove as you do anywhere else. Levitating on the water there will give you a full day's healing and recharging of SP with no interruptions.

Bard songs are different. At first, you need to carry wine or beer for your bard to regain his or her voice and sing more. At some point you will find a Bardsword (and later, a Singing Sword) that will do this automatically, and free you from carrying mugs of beer in your backpack. :D

The fast travel rakenan mentioned is the Road Wardens, who can transport you pretty quickly, but only to places you have been to. You have to walk to the sewers (e.g.) first, but after that the road wardens will take you there quickly.

Eventually you will travel more or less indefinitely without having to visit a temple or whatever, visiting a town or castle only to sell off loot, put stuff in the bank, and level up. You will find there are several places to do each of these things, so eventually you may never go back to the castle.
