Does carrying a lot of gold (say, millions) have a negative effect on the character/party?
If so, how? If not, why would anyone deposit gold into the bank if it doesn't earn interest?

It does not have an impact on you.
Depositing gold in the bank allows you to store it at one central place. Buying shop items e.g. is easier this way. It may not so useful when playing with the same characters, but gets handy when changing your party members often.
I am all open on ideas of improvement of course :-)

Makes sense. I have a core group of 5 characters that I use, and several other characters. My warrior carries my gold and I always have him.
