Increases as in makes it worse.<br/>
Any character.<br/>
With or without any AC modification spells. <br/>
<br/>
Unequiping the ring does not return the AC lost.<br/>
Re-equipping the ring does not increase AC further just the first time. <br/>

Bug or is the ring supposed to work this way?

It is not supposed to work this way.<br/>
Did you wear a Shield Ring before? You can only wear one ring at a time, because the magic of the rings interfere with each other. A shield ring would give you 2 AC, and wearing the troll ring would automatically unequip it, thus increasing your AC by 2 again.<br/>

Now I checked and indeed the character wearing the troll ring has an unequipped shield ring so spot on!<br/>

I did write before that it was valid for any character but I tested that again and it doesn't have that effect anymore.  I don't believe I imagined it but the pre-troll ring save games are long gone; I can't recreate the effect; and your shield ring answer fits so I guess that must be it. <br/>
